The Red Cross could not do its work without the help and support of its volunteers. Worldwide, there are more than 1.8 million regular volunteers who serve the organization in many roles. Your local Greater Somerset County Chapter is always looking for dedicated and caring people willing to volunteer their time. You can help us and people in the communities we serve by contributing one hour or several hours in the following areas.

Last year our volunteers donated 16,123 hours of time to the chapter.
This saved our organization over $302,629.

We want people who care passionately about our mission. In addition to governance responsibilities, we are looking for leaders with the capability to generate financial reserves for the organization through their personal commitments and by creating sustainable partnerships and relationships for the chapter.

Volunteers can choose several tracks in the Disaster Program. Some volunteers may choose to become members of our Disaster Action Team (DAT). Training is required, and most classes are held evenings at the Chapter House. Trained DAT volunteers will assist with direct assistance to disasters victims beginning with local events. More experienced volunteers may eventually choose to be assigned to larger national events. Some volunteers may prefer to do community disaster education, making presentations to residents and employees of Somerset County. Other volunteers may wish to assist the Disaster Director with inventory, records and reports and other administrative jobs.

Disaster Course Schedule

Since 1953 our chapter has offered volunteer drivers to transport elderly or disabled clients to medical appointments. Each trip is scheduled in advance and hours are very flexible; an average trip is approximately 3 hours. Drivers utilize Red Cross vehicles, which are covered by Red Cross insurance. Volunteers must have an unblemished driving record, be responsible, personable, and enjoy helping people.

Some volunteers in the Health and Safety Program may become certified American Red Cross instructors in courses such as CPR, AED (Automated External Defibrillator), First Aid, Water Safety and Babysitter's Training. American Red Cross Instructor Training is required to become an authorized instructor, as are ongoing updates and recertification. Other volunteers in this program may choose to become Community Educators offering presentations such as Scrubby Bear (teaching youth the principles of good hygiene), community preparedness and other non-certification classes. Still other volunteers in this program may wish to assist the Health & Safety Director with marketing, sales and public relations plans.

Volunteers will assist Chapter staff with planning and promoting special events and also may help organize and run fund raising activities. Writers, graphic designers and photographers would also be appreciated to help with work on our flyers, newsletters and press releases.
Office Assistants
Volunteers assist program directors with tasks such as data entry, filing, making copies and preparing mailings. Receptionists help keep the American Red Cross office running more smoothly and efficiently by answering and directing phone calls and greeting visitors.
Buildings and Grounds
Volunteers in this program will help with general maintenance and upkeep of the Chapter office, grounds, driveway and parking lot. Tasks may include cleaning windows, minor paint jobs, small repairs, weeding and raking.
